Tips for getting started in Fallout 4: Part 1

Updated: Nov 29, 2020

Vault 111
Entry to Vault 111, year 2077, Fallout 4, Bethesda Game Studios and Microsoft Studios (1)

Beginners to the game...

1. Adjust your Settings.

  • Change the lighting, colour of the HUD / Pip-Boy, sound and camera movement.

  • If you get dizzy or travel sick, slow the movement of the camera.

2. When you are in the starting house, take your time to create the character you want.

  • The facial creation tool is a bit tricky at first.

  • Be sure to look at the menu options as you click on different items.

  • There are set styles or colours for some things. Others need sculpting.

3. Take your time at the start of the game.

  • Learn to move your character.

  • You won't have weapons until you wake up from cryogenesis in Vault 111.

  • Walk around and click on things.

4. When you emerge from cryogenesis in Vault 111, it is your opportunity to learn to fight.

  • Collect everything. Cans, bottles, ashtrays - these are materials for building.

  • Look everywhere - there is no actual rush to leave Vault 111.

  • Drink water from sinks and drink fountains to regain health.

  • Learn how to switch from first to third person mode.

  • Pick up the baton on the table, near the window and water fountain.

  • Learn how to use block (left trigger in usual setup - LT).

5. Learn to use V.A.T.S (Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System) for shooting.

  • Using V.A.T.S will help you through many situations.

  • Don't be too proud to use a combination of organic shooting and V.A.T.S.

  • Shooting is best in first person mode, particularly when aiming organically.

  • Learn how to use weapon bash (right button - RB)

6. I find that organic fighting is best for melee weapons (bats, batons, hammers, swords).

  • Melee combat is better in third person mode.

  • If you also run back to avoid, then in again to hit, this will win many fights.

7. When you get your first Pip-Boy look through all the menu items.

  • Learn to find and equip items.

  • Notice where your quests are listed.

  • Look at how the map works - local and world map.

8. When you emerge from Vault 111 you can gather more useful resources.

  • Walk around the enclosed area (no enemies usually) and collect everything you can.

  • Have a look at the wasteland below. You will see Sanctuary. Take the path towards it.

  • Pick flowers & fruits, but don't wander too far from the path.

  • The water in the creek is radioactive, so don't stand in it for too long.

9. When you reach Sanctuary, head left towards the original house and you'll see the robot.

  • You can choose to click on the red workshop in the garage and press "Y" on the Xbox controller, to automatically transfer your 'junk' to create resources for building.

  • Talk to Codsworth, the robot.

  • Follow Codsworth to search for Shaun. There will be some enemies, but he will kill them anyway, even if you don't fight.

  • Go through all the speech options with Codsworth, as this will start quests.

10. Build basic resources before you go any further.

  • Learn how to use the workshop to clear broken items and build new ones.

  • Clear broken houses for resources.

  • Break down old streetlights, tyres, and fallen trees.

  • Keep as many items in houses that are still useful as possible. For now, lounge suites, tables, radios and some decorations are fine to keep.

  • Choose a location (house) and build yourself a bed and (metal) water fountain / sink.

  • There is a chemistry bench behind a house towards the big bridge. You can move it to the garage area with the other workbenches.

  • There is a cooking pot also at the house closest to the bridge.

  • Look for hidden safes and bobby pins to pick the locks.

  • Be careful with clearing furniture, as there are items in furnishings.

  • Upgrade your armor and weapons at the workbenches.

Make sure you sleep in your new bed and gain the well rested bonus before progressing.
